“In the beginning” (Genesis 1:1) describes that instant—different from what was before and different from what came after—when God created the heaven and earth. Genesis concerns itself primarily with what came after, the formation of the world and mankind, our history begun by God. Saint John, goes back before that instant to describe the cause of that instant and of creation and to declare that the Word was there.
