Report From St Paul's Fellowship of Labor

It has been an extraordinary summer for St. Paul's Fellowship of Labor (SPFL). This 2007 Summer season we completed four programs at three different sites throughout North America. In the past three months, we have led nearly 40 volunteers to three convents and a monastery. We thank all those people who have volunteered their time to support the Monastics of this day. An ancient tradition you have given your time to and your labors will be remembered in prayers, memories, and hearts for a long time. We echo Bishop Demetrius when we say that all those people who labor for the churches and monasteries are commemorated in every divine liturgy ("for they that labor and for they that chant"). It is exciting for us to say that in addition to discussing many fascinating topics on Orthodoxy, we also had a number of people become Catechumens to the Faith, and one recently baptized. Although our mission is to complete labor projects for monasteries, engage the youth of today in service work, and learn about the Monastic Tradition, we are happy to hear that so many people are moved by the Orthodox Faith and act on it. We invite you to come again and for those that could not join us this time please consider us as an opportunity to travel, meet new people, serve the Church, and make an adventure. May God Bless all of you.

Productivity Report:

Convent of the Holy Dormition, Canada

For one week, in the pleasant month of June, we led 15 volunteers and a number of locals in a variety of projects around the Convent. At the end of the week, we were happy to announce that we produced 18,000 candles, dug a trench 1000 feet long, installed 6 lamp posts with outlets, ran internet, speaker, and power lines to the guest house, installed switches in the convent, installed a deer fence for the fruit orchards, cleaned the ponds, cleared the waterfall, landscaped, installed a hardwood floor in the guest house after ripping out the old floor, helped clean and cook, and completed some forestry work. In addition, we traveled to downtown Toronto, went to parks, beaches that no one would swim in, went out for Sushi, traveled to a local lake, and saw Niagara Falls. Halleluiah!!!

Convent of the Meeting of the Lord, Washington State

For one week, in the wonderful month of July, 5 volunteers and many locals completed many projects in and around the grounds of the convent. After a great deal of preparatory work and many unsuspected blessing, SPFL insulated, dry walled, mudded, sanded, and painted three rooms and a bathroom which are to become much needed cells for the convent. In addition, we installed a new set of stairs in the barn, fixed odds and ends around the convent, mulched the grounds, mowed the lawn, and reorganized the attic space. In addition, we traveled to downtown Seattle for a day of buying, selling, and eating at the markets where fresh food was sold and fish was thrown through the air. Additionally, we enjoyed hospitality from the locals, Father Neketas, the Demock Family; and a guided tour through Deception Pass made for the perfect week. Amen!!!

The Holy Transfiguration Monastery and the Holy Nativity Convent

For one week, in the warm month of July and part of August, 9 male volunteers and 8 female volunteers labored at the both the monastery and convent. We were excited to fill two dumpsters with junk, clean the attic and reorganize its contents, clean out the basement of the monastery, haul branches up hills for chipping, help sand and prep two bathrooms, clean out ponds and fertilize land with this compost, and put together and prepare new beds in the monastery for a guestroom and living space for a dying man. Meanwhile, while at the convent, the women cleaned out two chapels, polished candle stands, cleaned icons and vigil lamps, cleaned Alpaca wool, cleared and painted a room, mulched the grounds, and prepared and cleaned up after meals. In addition, everyone spent a day in downtown Boston, walking the markets, harbor, and parks. We ended the day eating out and playing pool. Alleluia!!!

We thank all of your for putting in thousands of man hours this summer with us, praying with us, and becoming friends with us. Please keep current with our website as we announce new trips, like those to Guatemala and other international locations.

May God keep you and protect you.

My Sincere Thanks and Gratitude,

Co-Founder and Co-Chair of SPFL
Peter J Patitsas
